Geir Hagland (born 1952)

Hagland has a long history of activism, both in Norway and abroad. His engagement began already as a young man back home in Helgeland.

In the interview, he shares memories of growing up in Rødøy, and how, at just 18 years old, he attempted to join DNF-48. His application was denied, as the minimum age for membership at the time was 21. He also recounts the story behind founding the first gay organization in Bodø in January 1973.

He later became active in DNF-48 in Oslo, including a period as its leader. He worked extensively across the country with public outreach and education. Hagland received significant attention when he was assaulted at an information stand in Sandnes in 1979—an incident that was also captured on film by NRK.

In the video excerpt below, he talks about founding Bodø’s first association for gay people.

The full interview is available at the Queer Archive, part of the Special Collections at the University Library of Bergen.

The Queer Archive met Geir Hagland in Oslo in August 2017.
