Grethe Elisabeth Opsahl (1929-2021)

She first entered a convent - then found her great love.

Faith has always been important to Grethe Elisabeth Opsahl. She converted to Catholicism at a young age and spent several years in a convent in France. Eventually, however, she chose to leave the monastic life and became a teacher back home in Norway.

There, she also met the great love of her life, Signy, with whom she shared 30 years. Later, she became involved in Åpen kirkegruppe (Open Church Group) and remained an active senior in Oslo’s queer community. In the autumn of 2016, Skeivt arkiv interviewed Opsahl, who spoke about her time with the Sisters of St. Joseph in Grenoble—and about life with Signy.
