The Mattachine Society ble stiftet i Los Angeles i 1950 og var en av USAs aller første homorettighetsorganisasjoner, trolig bare etter Society for Human Rights i Chicago.  Organisasjonen var sammen med Daughters of Bilitis del av "the homophile movement" - homorettighetsbevegelsen i USA før Stonewall. 

Initiativtakeren var Harry Hay, kommunist og fagforeningsaktivist. Han var blant annet inspirert av Alfred Kinseys studie Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948).  

Navnet på organisasjonen hentet Hay fra middelalderfransk og en betegnelse på skuespillere som holdt sine identiter skjult og brukte kunst som virkemiddel for å protestere mot undertrykkelse. I et intervju forklarte han navnevalget slik:

So we took the name Mattachine because we felt that in the 1950s gays were also a masked people, unknown and anonymous, who might become engaged in morale building and helping ourselves and others, through struggle, to move toward total redress and change.  (Katz, 1976) 

The Mattachine Society fikk etter hvert lokale avdelinger i en rekke byer; blant andre San Fransisco, New York, Washington D.C. og Chicago. De utga tidsskriftet Mattachine Review, som i tråd med organisasjonens verdier hadde en mild tone og assimilistiske perspektiver på homorettighetsarbeidet.
